Premium brand Lexus has unveiled the 2010 HS 250h sedan at the Detroit auto show today.

The latest addition to Lexus' model range, the HS 250h is positioned above the IS sedan and is even taller than the ES model it precedes in the lineup. The HS features the same hybrid set up as the Toyota Camry Hybrid, with the automaker's dedicated hybrid system coupled to a 2.4 liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine with 187 hp and a CVT transmission driving the front wheels.

Lexus claims the HS 250h will be 30 percent more fuel-efficient than any model currently in its lineup and that it gets a SULEV emissions rating using 87-octane fuel. The euro-car-philes out there can laugh now, knowing how behind the North American market is with direct-injection gasoline engines, which require 99 or 100-octane fuel to achieve maximum performance and economy. The 2.4 liter in the HS is not direct-injection.

But the new HS will be sporting Lexus' eco-friendly credibility through the use of "Ecological Plastics" made from "plant-based" materials (why don't they just say organic?) which they call carbon-neutral, emitting less carbon-dioxide during its life-cycle than normal petroleum-based plastics. When you go enviro-friendly, you have to go all the way.

The HS 250h comes with standard 17-inch and optional 18-inch wheels. The car also comes with 10 airbags.
