why are traffic lights always in order.... Helpful Information

If you are asking why some lights dont have green on top or red in the middle, then I believe the answer is: 1st of all, if they were all in different orders then people may mistakenly think it is one color when it is really a different one because of the different order. Secondly, colorblind people need to rely on the order being constant. If someone cannot distinguish a red light from a yellow light, then they have to just go by what order they are in. Personally, I am slightly color blind and rely on the knowledge that red is on top, yellow in middle and green on bottom.

For an example, some intersections have 1 single light, either flashing red or yellow. If I am driving thru one of these and am not familiar with the intersection I have to really slow down and look very hard to distinguish wether it is red or yellow. In my opinion those lights are not very safe.
